The Hollywood Walk of Fame is one Los Angeles’ most visited tourist attractions. While many people have heard of it, there are some things you might not know about this famed location in LA. Here are 7 interesting facts about the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 2002 Muhammad Ali was given a star because it was decided that boxing was considered a form of live performance and therefore, Muhammad Ali could be be considered a live performer. At the boxers request, the star was placed on the wall of the Dolby Theatre because, according to The Guardian, Ali did not want people who didn’t respect him, to walk all over his name.
At this point, there have been four stars that have been stolen from the walk of fame. In 2005, Gregory Peck was the fourth star to have his plaque stolen. Interestingly enough, while the star was quickly replaced, the original one was never recovered. Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, and Gene Autry are the other celebrities who had their stars stolen.
In 2010, it was the Walk of Fame’s 50th anniversary. In order to honor the anniversary, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce actually created a time capsule and buried it at the corner of Hollywood and Highland, the place where the Walk originated. The capsule is set to be opened in 2060.
Over the years, some stars have actually turned down the opportunity to have a star on the walk of fame. Some of these celebrities include Julia Roberts, Clint Eastwood and George Clooney. In all, there have been over 40 celebrities who have turned down a star.
Did you know that below each person’s name there is a symbol that represents the category for which the star was known for. The five categories include motion pictures, broadcast television, broadcast radio, audio recording/music, and theatre/live performance.
Despite these categories, some stars on the walk of fame don’t belong to any category at all. For example, corporations such as the LA Dodgers and Victoria’s Secret have stars as well as members of the Apollo 11 space mission and even former LA Mayor, Tom Bradley has a star.
Sometimes, the stars are turned into shrines by dedicated fans. As you walk along Hollywood Blvd, you might notice flowers or knick knacks that have been placed on a star in honor of the celebrity. If you will be staying at one of the hotels close to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, be sure to come check out the stars that made the cut!
