10 of the Least Touristy Things to Do in LA

While Hollywood is an excellent destination to visit when in Southern California, sometimes you might want to get away from all the touristy things and try some things like the locals do. After you choose the best Hollywood hotel to stay at, it’s time to start planning your itinerary. Here’s a quick list of things to do in L.A with less of a touristy feel.

A stay in Los Angeles wouldn’t be complete without sushi, and Little Tokyo has some of the best. According to the locals, Sushi Komasa and Hama Sushi are some of the best in the area.

Be like a local and watch a movie outdoors at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This popular event shows classic films, cult films, and some blockbuster films as well. Visit cinespia.org to see what films are scheduled next.

Another classic is a stop at Olvera Street. This pedestrianized Mexican Marketplace is a throwback to the city’s Mexican roots. Enjoy vendors, authentic Mexican food, and all the churros you can handle.

During the summer, you can hear the L.A. Philharmonic rehearse at the Hollywood Bowl on weekday mornings for free. Enjoy the beautiful backdrop of the Hollywood Hills as well.

A hike at Griffith Park is a good alternative to the more popular, and more packed, Runyon Canyon. Griffith Park also offers beautiful views of the Hollywood Sign. Their most popular hiking trail is the Mt. Hollywood Trail, but with more than 50 miles of trails, it’s up to you!

Napa isn’t the only place for wine tasting in CA. Malibu has some of the best wineries in the area and what’s better than tasting wines with a beachfront view?

Did you know there are hundreds of secret staircases throughout LA? One of the best is the series of stairs off Highland, near Hollywood Blvd. Enjoy beautiful views of the city from the Hightower Elevator Tower. The Beachwood Canyon stairs also offer great views of the Hollywood sign.

LA is also a great location for improv. Some of the best include iO West and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Even better, tickets are usually only about $10!

At downtown, you can enjoy great views from the skyscrapers in the city. At the Perch, enjoy dinner, drinks, and a beautiful view of downtown at night.

4th Street Retro Row in Long Beach is a haven for those who love the 50s and all things hipster. Stop by and enjoy the shops, unique stores and great restaurants and bars.

The deal is a celebration of the theater’s 85th anniversary this year. 25 cents is the price of a movie ticket in 1926, when the theater first opened. The first 25 cent screening, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was held yesterday, April 23. Tickets went on sale Saturday, April 14th at noon and sold out in two hours. That’s no small feat, as the Chinese Theatre can seat 1,500 people!

The 25 Cent Movie Monday’s schedule is as follows:

April 23 – Breakfast at Tiffany’s

April 30 – Hell’s Angels

May 21 – Shanghai Express

May 28 – The King and I

All of these films premiered at the Chinese Theatre way back when. The Chinese theatre has hinted that these screenings could continue throughout the year if future screenings continue to sell out. This is a fantastic opportunity to view classic films at their original venue for a very low price.

DeMille’s “The King of Kings.” It was declared a historic-cultural landmark in 1968 and has been restored following several earthquakes in the Los Angeles area.

Tickets can be purchased at the Chinese Theatre box office and online here. There is a limit of 10 tickets per person. For more information on these screenings, follow the Chinese Theatre on Facebook and Twitter.
